The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 改编自茨维格的作品，被纳粹幽禁的男主阴差阳错得到了一本棋谱，在之后的日子靠背棋局来缓解被囚禁的困境。将短篇小说改编成电影，原著精巧的设计对于电影的时长来说难免短了些。免不了会加入不少情节、时空、人物。男主演过《无主之作》中艺术学院里戴帽子的教授，演技超赞。

不管你看懂或者没看懂山田洋次的风格，但这就是山田洋次的风格，对于电影的纯粹与喜爱，每一个镜头之间，都有神明存在，那就是电影之神
老爷子演的太好了，不过就感觉和年轻的时候不是一个性格。
看到山田洋次的新电影依然会感动，很好的故事，拜托导演继续拍下去吧！

友情分三星 有点失望
人死后会去电影院，一直一直看电影吗？藤本树如是说。
山田洋次的电影色调总有一种温暖的主题，虽然底色都是一样。我想说小伎俩是管用的，电影之神也会用小伎俩。
山田洋次的命题创作，我是冲着永野芽郁去的，不知道导演是谁。但看到后半部分感觉确实像山田洋次的电影。
导演一贯的风格，平淡有温情。北川景子好漂亮。
令人无感的山田洋次电影，无论是人物故事的情感关系，还是关于电影的情愫，都无法令人产生共鸣、有着共情。两星。
三星半。没那么好，但还是被感动哭了好几次，迷影情怀大过电影本身的剧情。
把茨威格小说改了人物设计和背景，纳粹想用监禁从奥地利律师嘴里套出密码，却不想监禁成就了一位象棋大师。电影里是单独被关在酒店房间里隔离了一年，出来后战胜世界冠军，不知道疫情之后国内会出现多少象棋大师。男主角前些年有部电影《希特勒回来了》，更好看。
观影途中我在脑海中列了一张批评质问清单，但是电影尾声回到火车里的场景，用皮尺丈量的那一幕，那一瞬间，我大哭一场原谅了一切。我太爱苏打了，他眼里的光、额头低落的汗、在片场的种种认真和痴傻、宣告梦想时的自信和纯真，都一次次打动我，苏打本人让我对这个并不讨喜的角色怀有飞蛾扑火的那种执着，“我没有想着要让阿乡给我幸福，是我要让阿乡幸福。”
卖情怀的电影。以前的生活吵吵闹闹就是一生，爱不爱的，很难说清，都缠在一起了。有说艺术家都是一身的毛病才能铸就。最后又有点像范进中举。林林总总，各种乱炖，拍的好，百感交集，拍的不好，显得有些杂乱，面多了冲击力就弱了。也许适合静静悠闲的午后，喝口热茶，慢慢看吧。PS:以前的日子仿佛想告诉你，家庭里没有对错，不知道是对是错。
